METHODOLOGY · EMISSION FACTORS
Know exactly which factor produced a result
An emission factor converts a business activity — liters of diesel, kWh of electricity — into greenhouse-gas emissions. OCEANS™ Sustainability records the source, version, and units behind every one it applies.

Source
Where a factor comes from — for example a government agency or recognized emissions database.
Version
Emission factors are periodically updated. OCEANS™ Sustainability records which version was used.
Units
The unit a factor applies to (per liter, per kWh, per kilogram) so it lines up with your activity data.
Geography
Many factors — especially for electricity — vary by grid region or country.
Reporting period
The year or period a factor was published for, since factors change over time.
Why versioning matters
When an emission factor is updated, a recalculated result can differ from a prior year's figure even though nothing about your operations changed. OCEANS™ Sustainability keeps the factor version attached to each result so that difference is visible and explainable, not a mystery.
Every factor, traceable to its source
